2021.10.21

If you’re someone who loves to stay updated regarding the latest skincare trends, then you might have seen articles about microneedling tips and benefits. Microneedling has always been a popular choice among a wide demographic when it comes to skin rejuvenation and resurfacing. Compared to other technologies that have only recently been released, microneedling has been at the forefront of 21st-century beauty and aesthetic procedures. It has always been considered reliable, safe, and effective which is why many people still prefer microneedling as their go-to skincare treatment.

The Evolution of Microneedling

Unbeknownst to many, the concept of using needles for beauty and cosmetics has been around for hundreds of years. In ancient history, evidence shows that some cultures have actually adapted a microneedling method of some form. The technology that we are utilizing today, however, is based on modern scientific concepts.

In 1996, Dr. Andre Camirand performed a procedure on his patients where he tried to hide enlarged hypertrophic scars by tattooing their skin. He then noticed that the pigments being tattooed on the patients were gradually dissolving and were instead being replaced by actual melanin. Additionally, the scars were also showing signs of improvement in terms of color, texture, and overall appearance. Soon after, Camirand had an idea to utilize a tattoo gun on the skin without adding any pigments. His serendipity is now the concept behind the modern microneedling technology we have today.

The effectiveness of microneedling can be attributed to how well the needles can stimulate collagen production within the skin. Though many different kinds of microneedling methods became popular in recent years, the technological foundation remains the same. Today, people can even perform the microneedling process in the comfort of their own homes using a small microneedling stamp or commonly known as dermarollers.

Dermarolling Defined

The concept we now know as dermarolling was first introduced by Dr. Des Fernandes, a plastic surgeon. Using a smaller microneedling stamp he was able to establish a more portable and simple microneedling device. Dr. Fernandes initially introduced the device to stimulate collagen production specifically above the lips at the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Congress in 1996. Sales first began in Asian regions but the device soon gained international popularity due to how effective it was.

Similar to the microneedling used in dermatological clinics, dermarollers stimulate collagen and elastin production by inserting tiny needles into the surface of the skin. Dermarollers come in different sizes and are used specifically depending on the skin condition being addressed. It can help eliminate or reduce the appearance of skin irregularities ranging from simple, shallow acne scars to deep surgical scars.

What to Expect Post-Procedure

Whether you prefer to use a dermaroller at home or undergo a microneedling procedure in your local clinic, it’s essential to know what to expect post-treatment so you can take proper care of your skin while it heals. Asking for microneedling tips from your local skin specialist can also help when it comes to taking care of your skin after the procedure.

Typically, the skin turns bright red after each session and might persist for more than 24 hours. The redness might not look pleasing but covering it with makeup immediately after treatment can cause severe reactions or acne breakouts. You also might feel a little bit of stinging when touching your skin so applying gentle products that can soothe this sensation is the best option until the redness subsides. Some people also experience peeling and swelling within the first few days but this is rather normal for any skin rejuvenation and resurfacing treatment.

Microneedling Tips Post-Treatment

Doctors would always provide excellent microneedling tips before and after treatment so it’s important to always follow these guidelines to ensure the best results and avoid any severe side effects. It’s also important to maintain the health of your skin even long after the procedure so that you can enjoy long-lasting results. By following simple skincare recommendations, you can keep the health of your skin and extend the effects of microneedling. Here are some common tips you might receive post-treatment.

Apply Sunscreen - With or without treatment, excessive sun exposure can always be detrimental to your skin’s health. Staying under the sun for too long exposes you to harmful UV rays that can cause damages to your skin. It can also cause signs of premature aging and wrinkles. This is why specialists always recommend applying sunscreen whenever doing an outdoor activity.

Sunscreen protects your skin from the harmful UV rays that are emitted by the sun. After treatment, a common microneedling tip you might hear is to constantly apply sunscreen within a two-week period. However, it’s still ideal to keep this habit even long after your microneedling session to maintain the health of your skin.

Use Only Recommended Products - After treatment, doctors would usually recommend products or anti-biotics that can prevent infections. Since your face is more vulnerable and sensitive after the procedure, a good microneedling tip is to seek mild products that can soothe the discomfort but always make sure to consult your doctor before purchasing any.

It’s also important that you wash your hands before touching your face. Doctors would always advise you to avoid touching your face but sometimes this is unavoidable. It’s important to take extra precautions before making any contact to prevent infections.

Avoid Contaminants - Although going to the gym or spa is a common leisure activity for many people, it’s essential to avoid any kind of recreation that would cause you to sweat heavily. Going swimming is also highly discouraged as your skin may come in contact with foreign contaminants that might cause infections or allergic reactions.

You may resume your normal routine within 3 days or according to your doctor’s advice. Applying makeup is also not advisable and a common microneedling tip is to keep your face clear of any products within at least a day post-procedure. Always remember that if you do experience any kind of severe side effects, the first course of action should be to let your doctor know before taking any medication.
